Last weekend I had the fortunate experience of taking a workshop with Tao Porchon-Lynch at Strala. Tao has packed more into her 93 years of age than an average person could over 200. Not only has she studied yoga under Indra Devi and BKS Iyengar, but she was a successful actress under contract at MGM during the 1940’s and 50’s, a screenwriter and documentary filmaker in the the 1960’s and 70’s and has recently become an award winning world class ballroom dancer (her dance partner is just 24!).
Her workshop was fun, as well as challenging and informative. I mastered the forearm wheel as well as greatly improved my dancer pose. My favorite part though was listening to her talk about being in India and watching people do their sun salutations with the sunrise to begin the day.
Tao posseses a certain magical aura. Even though her voice is small and soft, her words are powerful. I’ve read that truly enlightened people can touch you with with just their presence. Tao is certainly one of those people.
